MELISSA SOCKANOWICH
Practical Nursing - 2015
What brought you to Mohawk College?
What brought me to Mohawk was the reputation it carried for the health programs, I also very much wanted to have the support of the Indigenous Student Services.
Tell us about your favourite Mohawk experience?
I think the camaraderie you build with your peers and the diversity that comes with taking a program at Mohawk. You get to meet different people at all stages of life and the professors truly want you to succeed. I have to say my favourite memories came from the sim lab IAHS.
What impact has Mohawk had on your life?
Mohawk has given me a sense of pride in my education and community. I have long friendships that I have till this day that I carry with me.
What are you up to now?
Currently, I work for the community of the Six Nations of the Grand River as the program supervisor of palliative care, I have also taken on the newly created dementia team as I have a passion and love for this area. I enjoy leadership and growing to know the teachings and roots of the Haudenosaunee people. I’ve worked as a diabetic advanced foot care nurse, a community clinician for the Alzheimer’s Society, Palliative Nurse in the hospital and now as a leader for others.
