HEIDI ZIMMER

Child and Youth Care - 1986

What brought you to Mohawk College?

It was honestly a fluke. I was interested in working with children and I had a friend who was also applying to the program. I had gone to two other open house information sessions at other Colleges but preferred the Mohawk one.

Tell us about your favourite Mohawk experience?

I met one of my best friends! She and I were both on the waiting list. Our class had to participate in a three day First Aid course before school started so everyone else got to know each other. We both started on the second day of school and Karen and I instantly became besties. We remained friends from that point on until she passed away in January of this year!

What impact has Mohawk had on your life?

The CCW program became a stepping stone for my career of working with children in a various capacities. It also gave me hands on practical experience through placement opportunities in areas I was interested in. As well, it gave me an opportunity to meet one of the most beautiful people in the world, who became a lifelong friend.

What are you up to now?

After graduating from Mohawk College, I worked in the Childcare field for a few years, before attending the McMaster University School of Social Work. The background education at Mohawk was very beneficial in several of my courses, which actually helped me get a job after graduating because one of my instructors remembered me from class called me to offer me a job at FACS Niagara. I have since become an elementary teacher and world like to continue my career as a special education teacher.
